City of Ica

The city of Ica is home to one of the most important tourist attractions of Ica and Peru, considered a “must” on your trip to this beautiful city, we are talking about nothing more and nothing less than: the Huacachina, the most famous oasis in South America. The Huacachina is synonymous of fun, party, heat, sun, adventure sports and much more, which represents very well the coast of our immense Peru. The city of Ica is known by many names, among them: the City of the Oasis, the City of the Guano Islands and the City of the Wine Industry.

At what altitude is Ica located?

The city of Ica is located at 406 meters above sealevel. Its altitude is low since this city is located in the coastal region of Peru.

What is the best season to visit Ica?

The best season to visit Ica is the summer season, which starts in January and ends in April, but sometimes it extends until May. We suggest these months not only for the summer heat but also for the grape harvest season, which takes place in the months of January and February, months in which you can observe the vineyards full of grapes ready to be harvested and celebrate the Harvest Festival, in honor of the harvest of the new grapes that will be used for the production of piscos and wines in the first two weeks of March.

How to get to the city of Ica?

In short, from Lima is the easiest option to get to Ica, but if you are in other regions of Peru there are also options by road to get to Ica, but these can take much longer.

Many travelers arriving at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima usually first visit the city of Lima and then go to Ica and from there continue to the south of Peru: Arequipa, Puno and Cusco, in my experience this is the option that I have recommended to my foreign friends.

Note: There is NO airport in the city of Ica, the closest one is the airport of Pisco, in the region of Ica, but it is not used for commercial travel (with some exceptions) but only for the use of the Peruvian Armed Forces, so the only option to get to Ica is to go by road.

By car

Traveling by car is the most convenient option if you want to have privacy and travel alone with your family, in case you do not have a car a good option is to rent one and get to Ica quietly, you can also reach several of the tourist destinations in Ica by road, so you would save on tourist service. From Lima to Ica you must travel 340 Km and you arrive in Ica in approximately 5 hours.

If you dare to make the route by car from Lima to Ica, here are my favorite places for breakfast or lunch:

Tambo Rural, is a stand of artisan breads at Km 52 of the Panamericana Sur, usually do not sell coffee or tea, but the breads are very fresh and rich, also come in several versions of flavors. Each bread costs between S/. 3 to 5 soles (USD 1 to 2 dollars);

Panadería Toñito, is a very well known bread stand, it is located at Km 62 Panamericana Sur, their breads are really delicious and the place is always very crowded, also their breads come in various versions of flavors and stuffed with cheese, ham, meat, etc.. It is worth stopping and trying the breads, they sell coffees and infusions. Each loaf costs between S/. 3 to 5 soles (USD 1 to 2 dollars); and,

Panadería Sabor y Tradición, also a stand located at km 62 Panamericana Sur, exactly next to Panadería el Toñito there, what I like the most is the bread with chicharrón, you can also find bread with asado and soups, such as caldo de gallina, here they also sell coffee and infusions. The bread with pork rinds is S/. 10 soles (USD 3 dollars).

By bus

This is a very popular option for travelers. The transportation companies that provide service on the Lima-Ica and Ica-Lima routes and the best known are: Peru Bus and Cruz del Sur.

You can find tickets for between S/. 35 to 80 (USD 10 to 22 dollars) soles per person, everything will depend on the season and how far in advance you buy your ticket, obviously the cost is cheaper if you buy it in advance. The trip lasts a little less than 7 hours, I suggest that you make the trip at night so you can rest on the bus and take advantage to start the day in Ica.

The cab fare from the bus terminal either Cruz del Sur or Peru Bus to your accommodation, depending on the distance, is approximately between S/. 10 to 15 soles (USD 3 to 4 dollars) and even less.

By tourist agency

There are many tour agencies that offer ALL INCLUSIVE tours, which mostly implies that they take care of the transfer from Lima to Ica. The tours that include transportation service are usually 1 day or 2 day tours.

Where and what to eat in the city of Ica?

What are the typical dishes of Ica?

The typical and representative dishes of the Ica Region are: carapulcra with dry soup and pallares salad. The carapulcra is a potato and meat stew and the sopa seca is noodles with basil dressing. The pallares salad is a combination of tomato chunks, lettuce, lemon and pallares (a legume with high nutritional value).

Although these dishes are prepared in many regions of Peru, the way these dishes are prepared in each place is totally different. Ica, in my opinion, has the best version of these dishes. Do not leave Ica without trying its traditional gastronomy, because who does not try the flagship dishes of each place you visit is as if you had never visited.

Where to eat in the city of Ica?

In every big city you can find endless options of places to have breakfast, lunch and dinner, so Ica is no exception. However, we know that finding the best places in an endless number of options is difficult, so here are the places that I have had the opportunity to visit and those that have the best references:

Desayunos

Puesto de Mamá Luz, in the Mercado Modelo de Ica (2 blocks from the Plaza de Ica) you will find a variety of breakfast options to choose from, but for us one of the best options is undoubtedly the Mamá Luz stand, where you will find breads with chicharrón, asado and sangrecita from S/. 15 soles (USD 4 dollars), they also offer fruit juices, past coffee and infusions. In general the prices are very good and the portions are generous. I suggest that you arrive early because this place is very good and usually fills up with diners quite quickly, if you arrive a little late you will have to wait between 10 to 15 minutes to be served, but it is worth the wait.

Lunch

El Catador de Cristel, is a very good place to try the true seasoning of Ica food, here they serve a finger-licking carapulcra with dry soup and a very good pallares salad and they also serve good portions of pork crackling.

Prices range from S/. 35 to 45 (USD 10 to 12 dollars) per main course. They only serve typical dishes on Sundays and holidays. In addition, you can enjoy a free wine tasting if you eat at the restaurant. It should be noted that the restaurant is located in a family farm, so you will find several restaurants next door, which also have a very good cuisine.

Restaurant El Cordón y Rosa, the specialty of this restaurant is seafood and meat dishes. I highly recommend this place because it is particularly difficult for me to find a good restaurant that serves good seafood. I highly recommend their “ronda marina” dish and their stuffed shrimp causa. The service was also good, plus their kitchen is open which always gives diners confidence about the ingredients they use and the hygiene in the preparation. Prices range from S/. 35 to 50 soles (USD 10 to 12 dollars) per main course and their portions are normal but the seasoning is really good.

Where to stay in the city of Ica?

I suggest you read this before choosing a place to stay, it can help you a lot.

In Ica City there are many lodging options, most of the accommodations are located very close to the Huacachina Oasis and some few near the Ica square.

Choosing one or the other place has its advantages and disadvantages. Near the Huacachina Oasis, as I mentioned, you will find more options of hostels, Airbnb and hotels and, some accommodations overlook the Huacachina dunes and swimming pools, plus they are closer to restaurants overlooking the Huacachina Oasis, but both accommodations and restaurants and bars are usually more expensive because of the area in which they are located.

On the other hand, near the square of Ica, you will find low budget accommodation and you will be closer to the shopping area, banks and the model market, you will also find restaurants and bars with more affordable prices if your budget is limited.

But if you choose one or the other option you should know that cabs or mototaxis (3-wheel motorcycle) are not very expensive, the trip from Huacachina to the square of Ica and vice versa costs between S/. 8 to 12 soles (USD 3 to 4 dollars) depending on the season and the number of people.
