Climate of Peru

To understand the climate of Peru, it is necessary to know that this country is divided into 3 regions: Coast, Highlands and Jungle, so, each of these regions has different climates and microclimates. Here is some important information about the climate of Lima (the capital of Peru) and the regions of Peru:

Lima

Winter season

The winter season in Lima starts at the end of June and ends at the end of September. During this season the days are humid and full of thick fogs and, from time to time, with unexpected “garúas” (light rains). As for the temperature, it can reach up to 12°C, but it is usually between 13°C to 16°C. For this season I suggest you wear warm enough clothes.

Spring season

The spring season in Lima starts in October and ends in December. In this season the weather is usually a bit unstable as sometimes you can find hot days full of sunshine and, at other times, dull and cold days. But, in general, this season is very good, as the temperature is usually above 15 °C. For this season I suggest you to have a coat on hand, especially for the evenings, which is when the temperature drops the most.

Summer season

The summer season in Lima starts in January and ends in March. The temperature during this season is between 18°C to 30 °C or more. So the weather is very good but often very intense. For this season I suggest you to wear light clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Autumn season

Autumn in Lima starts at the end of March and ends at the end of June. Even in this season you can still feel the heat of the summer as the temperature exceeds 17 °C.

Peruvian Coast

The climate of the Peruvian Coast is normally warm, the days are clear, dry and there is a cool wind, especially in the north of the Peruvian coast. During the course of the whole year, the temperature is generally between 17 °C to 33 °C.

In summer season, which starts in January and ends in March, it can reach more than 35 °C. So I also recommend lots of sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.

On the other hand, in the winter season there are sometimes garúas (light rains).

On the coast of Peru you can enjoy the sun, the beaches and endless afternoons with a blinding sunset.

The Andes of Peru

In the Peruvian Altiplano there are only 2 important seasons, which you have to take into account before traveling: Rainy season and Dry season.

Dry season

The dry season in the Peruvian highlands starts in April and ends in October. In this season you will find very hot, clear and sunny days, but at night the days are very cold, because in this season frosts are formed (freezing water) and the temperature can reach below 0°C. During the day the temperature is between 15°C and 30°C and, at night, between 0°C and 7°C.

If you dare to visit the highlands of Peru, such as Cusco or Puno in the rainy season I suggest you to have the appropriate clothing, remember that in this season the temperature is low and being prepared prevents bad moments.

Rainy season

The rainy season in the Peruvian highlands begins in November and ends in March. The weather during this season is usually warm during the day, but it tends to rain more frequently. Daytime temperatures in this season are between 13°C and 23°C and at night between 5°C and 7°C.

If you are lucky even in the rainy season you can find several dry days. If you visit Cusco, Puno or other places in the highlands of Peru in this season, I suggest you to do your activities from 10:00 am because at this time the skies begin to clear and you can appreciate the landscapes much better.

If you dare to visit the highlands of Peru in the rainy season you should have the appropriate clothing so you can enjoy the scenery.

Jungle

The Peruvian jungle has 2 very distinct zones, which have different climates:

The high jungle zone ( above 650 m.a.s.l.) has a subtropical climate and generally good, but with abundant rainfall especially in the months of November to March. On the other hand, its hottest and sunniest months are from April to October.

As for the lowland jungle (below 650 m.a.s.l.) its climate is tropical and the hottest months with very good weather are also the months from April to October. Many times the temperature, both in the jungle or low jungle does not vary, is generally very good, between 17 ° C to 35 ° C.

I suggest you visit the Peruvian jungle especially in the months of April to October, because in these months when it does not rain much rivers decrease their flow and routes, tracks and roads are easily accessible and this facilitates the passage of vehicles and passers-by. Remember that the jungle is very humid and for this you must take your precautions.

If your intention is to visit the Peruvian jungle I suggest you go well prepared, one of the things you can not forget is mosquito repellent, wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, light clothing and more.
