Park of the Wall

The Parque de la Muralla is a public park located in downtown Lima. This park is well known for its history and for the activities you can do there, in addition to its extensive green areas and recreation areas.

Regarding the history of this park, it is important to mention that the Parque de la Muralla project began in 2004 in order to give a new and fresh face to the slopes of the Rimac River. When construction began, part of the tajamar, an angle-shaped structure founded in 1535, which was used to prevent the river’s flow from flooding the city of Lima, was found. The tajamar can be seen on the second floor of the Parque de la Muralla, in addition to the tajamar, the foundations and remains of what was once the Lima Wall were found, and that is why this park bears its name.

The Lima Wall was erected in the 1600’s with the purpose of protecting Lima from pirates and enemy corsairs, as well as in the Real Felipe del Callao, but in 1867 it was decided to demolish the Lima Wall, since its structure did not make sense because Lima was never attacked in all those years and, in addition, due to the great urban expansion of that time it was necessary to create avenues and main streets.

In the Park of the Wall you can also find 3 original cannons from 1684. Don’t forget to visit the park’s Site Museum where you will find English tableware and other objects that were found in the Parque de la Muralla.
