Recommendations for your visit to the Citadel of Machu Picchu

Before and during your stay at the Machu Picchu Citadel, I suggest you follow the following recommendations to make your entrance and your tour of the citadel as pleasant as possible:

  • When boarding a Consettur bus

I suggest you have your bus ticket, your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu and your identity card or passport at hand, as you will be asked for this documentation before boarding the bus to the Machu Picchu Citadel.

  • At the entrance gate to the Citadel

You must have your entrance ticket in hand and your identity card or passport. For no reason can you enter before the time indicated on the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu.

Remember that you can only enter the Citadel at the exact time indicated on your ticket or up to an hour later, no more, as you run the risk of not being allowed to enter regardless of the reason you have.

  • Regarding the entrance ticket to the Citadel

Your tour can only last between 3 to 5 hours, which starts at the time indicated on your entrance ticket, so I suggest you arrive on time so you can enjoy your tour with peace of mind.

There are no exchanges or refunds on your entrance ticket, so I suggest you choose your ticket wisely.

  • Regarding your tour in the Citadel

Re-entry is not allowed, except in emergency cases, but you would be reducing your time in the Citadel, so I suggest you take precautions. You can go to the restrooms before entering the citadel of Machu Picchu (at the entrance you will find restrooms) also, you can eat or buy a bottle of water at the cafeteria located at the entrance of the Citadel.

The tour is unidirectional, this means that you can not go back to contemplate a landscape or take another picture or video, so take your precautions and try to walk slowly so you can take all the photos and videos on your way. Take advantage of every step!

  • Restrictions at the Citadel

They only allow one backpack of 40, 35 and 20 cm. If you have luggage that does not comply with these measurements, I suggest that you leave it at your accommodation or at the clothing guard located at the entrance of the citadel, the cost of this service is S/.10 soles (USD 2.50 dollars).

You are not allowed to enter with food or electronic equipment such as drone, selfie stick, camera equipment, etc.. Only camera, cell phone or video recorder.

You are not allowed to shout, dance or sing for your social networks. While you can make videos, you are not allowed to raise your voice, so I suggest you keep “prudence” when you are making your content for social networks.

The Citadel of Machu Picchu closes at 5:30 pm.

What is the best time to enter Machu Picchu?

The best schedule will depend a lot on the season you are in when you visit Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu and, in general, Cusco has only 2 important seasons: Dry Season or also called High Season and Rainy Season.

If you travel in Dry Season

The Dry Season (from April to October) we suggest you to enter from 6:00 to 8: 00 in the morning, because being early you will have clear views that will allow you to take very good pictures, also the temperature is suitable and you can connect with nature by listening to the sounds of birds and other animals and, last but not least, at that time of the morning you will find fewer travelers.

But yes, if you choose this time (6:00 to 8:00 am) you will have to spend the night in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), to leave your lodging very early in the morning towards the Machu Picchu Citadel.

If you are traveling during the Rainy Season

On the other hand, if you plan to visit Machu Picchu in Rainy Season (November to March) it is advisable to enter Machu Picchu after 11:00 am or 12:00 pm, because in the mornings the views are cloudy, but from 10 or 11 the skies begin to clear to contemplate the landscapes and to take good photos and videos.
