About Vinicunca Mountain

This beautiful mountain is located in southern Peru and in the last 5 years has become one of the most important tourist attractions in Cusco after our Wonder of the Modern World: Machu Picchu.

The mountain is located in the Cordillera Vilcanota, surrounded by the snowy Ausangate, getting there is a long journey, but I assure you that it will be worth every minute because at the end you will have a view that will remain etched in your memory for life. This mountain is also well known as the 7 Colors mountain or the Rainbow mountain.

Vinicunca mountain is located at more than 5000 m.a.s. l. and has great recognition not only in Peru, but also internationally, since the American media Business Insider and the National Geographic magazine considered Vinicunca in their list of 100 essential places to visit in the world. The energy you experience in Vinicunca is as special as the one you feel in Machu Picchu.

The colorful Vinicunca Mountain is due to the oxidation of minerals from the waters of the mountain ranges, the winds and the humidity. The colors of the Vinicunca Mountain are various, but the most notorious are red, purple, green, yellow, and pink.

How to get to Vinicunca Mountain?

The most used: 1 day (full day) tour to the 7 Colors Mountain.

On your own (without tourist agencies)

By public transportation

There are several routes to reach the Vinicunca mountain. Here is the easiest route to the Mountain of 7 Colors: the Cusipata Route.

To start the tour you need to take a bus to Cusipata in the Urumbaba – Sicuani Terminal, which is located on Huayruropata Avenue in front of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega Stadium (5 minutes by car from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco). The cost of the trip is between S/. 5 to 10 soles (USD 1.50 to 3 dollars) per person and lasts approximately 2 hours. When you arrive at Cusipata, you can buy drinks and some snacks and also go to the restrooms.

Then you will have to take a colectivo (public cab) to the end of the Pampachurí road, where you will find the access parking lot for the 7-color Mountain, the trip takes 15 minutes and the cost is between S/. 5 to 10 sol es (USD 1.50 to 3 dollars) per person. From the parking lot you will start your hike of less than 2 hours to the Vinicunca Mountain, in this parking lot you will find the tourist buses.

Remember that you must find out the schedule of public transport back to Cusco, you can check with the same drivers of your outbound trip and with the transportation agency in the Terminal Urumbaba – Sicuani. In addition, I suggest you always use Google Maps to be sure of the route you are taking.

By car

In the end, using your own car or renting one, ends up being the most economical and comfortable option. The advantage of traveling by car is that you can decide your stops and places to spend the night, rest or eat. If you decide to drive to the 7 Colors Mountain, I suggest the Cusipata route, which I explain above.

What do I need to know before visiting Vinicunca Mountain?

Take precautions against “altitude sickness” or “soroche”.

As we had already mentioned before, the Vinicunca Mountain is located at more than 5000 m.a.s. l. unlike the City of Cusco which is located at a little more than 3000 m.a.s. l. which means that you have to be prepared… prepared for the “altitude sickness” or also called “soroche”.

The “altitude sickness” or “soroche” is frequent in people who are not used to live at high altitude. The “soroche” begins to be felt at more than 2000 m.a.s.l., which implies that the body begins to feel the lack of oxygen, causing headache, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, among other symptoms. To prevent “altitude sickness” or “soroche” on the way to Vinicunca Mountain, we suggest the following:

Do cardiovascular exercises one day before the trip to Vinicunca.

Do not drink or eat too much the night before your trip to Vinicunca, digestion is slow at altitude so it is better to eat slowly, chewing several times to digest food properly. I suggest that you follow this advice all the way to your visit to Vinicunca and avoid eating too much at breakfast and lunch.

Do not party the day before your trip to Vinicunca, it is important that your body is rested and has enough energy and stamina for the trip.

Take Sorojchi Pills or other medicines for “altitude sickness” 1 or 2 hours before starting your trip to Vinicunca. Always consult your doctor and read the contraindications of the medical products you wish to take. Sorojchi Pills works very well for me, I always take it every time I go to the highlands of Peru.

Drink coca tea and chew (chew) coca leaves before and during the trip to Vinicunca, coca has some components that gives you energy and fights the “altitude sickness”. You can get it in stores, supermarkets and local markets in Cusco, they also sell it on the way to Vinicunca. Personally, I don’t really like to chacchar coca leaf, but I know that many people find it pleasant, I prefer to drink coca tea with a little sugar.

Carry flowery water, this is my favorite, it opens the nostrils and helps you breathe better. Try to always carry it with you, as well as coca leaves or coca tea. You can get it in many stores and supermarkets, as well as in pharmacies and drugstores.

Walk at your own pace, do not hurry and do not let anyone else do it. It is not a competition, the important thing is to enjoy the walk.

Plan well your itinerary for Vinicunca

Full day tours to Vinicunca Mountain from Cusco City usually last between 10 to 13 hours, so I suggest you set aside 1 full day for the 7 Colors Mountain.

Visiting Vinicunca on the last days of your trip to Cusco

As we know Vinicunca Mountain is located in the highest areas of Cusco, so it is preferable to leave it for the end, as it is important that your body is acclimatized in lower areas to reach the highest.

Many attractions in Cusco, including the Citadel of Machu Picchu, are located below 5000 m.a.s.l., So, if you ask me: What to visit first, Machu Picchu or 7 Colors Mountain, then definitely Machu Picchu, because it is always better to start from the lower areas to go to the higher ones to avoid the “altitude sickness”. Don’t forget, always try to acclimatize, don’t stop doing it.

Yes, these animals serve as food for several communities, as they can withstand low temperatures all year round unlike other farm animals, being fundamental and important for the survival of several communities that are in the mountains, besides being a food rich in protein. A portion of alpaca chicharrón is between S/. 8 to 15 soles (USD 3 to 5 dollars), and you can buy it even at the top of the 7 Colors Mountain.

While flying a drone is prohibited in the Machu Picchu Citadel, flying a drone is not, so if you want a view from the heights of this magnificent place I recommend you take your drone and enjoy.

The trek to the 7 Colors Mountain has a moderate high rating. Although the hike is NOT very long, since the average duration is between 3 to 4 hours round trip, many travelers are affected by the altitude and temperature of the area.

Remember that the 7 Colors Mountain is located at 5200 m.a.s.l., so breathing is even more difficult if you are walking uphill. Click here for more information on how to prepare for “altitude sickness”.

The temperature in the early morning and very early in the morning in Cusco, is low, between 0°C to 7° C, but in the course of the day the temperature rises a little. Remember that the hike to Vinicunca is done very early in the morning (4:00 am), so it is essential to be warm.

How to dress for Vinicunca Mountain #GRWM

The clothing for the 7 Colores Mountain is very important.

Remember that the temperature on the mountain in the morning is 0°C to 7° C, so I suggest you wear the following:

  • A coat of your preference, but not too heavy, the weight does not help at altitude.
  • Awide-brimmed hat to cover your face and ears, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Warm but flexiblepants, mobility is important.
  • Trekking shoes (NOT simple sneakers), this will help you on the rough trail.
  • Gloves and scarves, the neck and hands are the parts that get cold quickly.
  • Warm hat, this helps a lot to keep you warm.
  • Windbreaker, the wind at high altitudes is often oppressive.
  • A raincoat, if you are traveling in rainy weather.
  • A small and light backpack to store your coat when the temperature starts to rise and other objects.

What to bring for Vinicunca Mountain?

I suggest you take only what you need for the hike, it is important to be light. Here are some items that may be useful for you:

  • Snacks, dried fruits, chocolates, but remember that on the way you can buy products in several stores, and the 1 day tour normally includes breakfast and lunch.
  • A bottle, it is always advisable to have a special bottle to keep hot or cold water, also this is very useful if you plan to drink coca tea to prevent “altitude sickness”. On the way you will find many locals selling coca tea in cups, but you can ask them to pour the tea in your bottle.
  • Camera or your cell phone and extra battery, you are traveling to a unique tourist site and you will want to capture it forever.
  • Trekking cane, many travelers carry it not only for Vinicunca but for all their trips, although thick and long branches are also useful.
  • Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen, the sun at high altitudes damages the skin.
  • Binoculars, indispensable to appreciate the animals in their natural habitat, as well as places that are not accessible to tourists.
  • Cash (Peruvian soles), the 1 day tour does not include access to various communities. The amount for national travelers is S/. 15 soles (USD 5 dollars) and for foreign travelers (without residence card) is S/. 20 soles ( USD 6.5 dollars). Let’s remember that this money is used to support the communities that live from tourism.

What is the best season to visit Vinicunca Mountain?

We know that in Cusco we have 2 very marked seasons: Rainy Season and Dry Season.

Actually, Vinicunca Mountain is open all year round, so you can visit the mountain whenever you want, but my personal recommendation is that you visit it in Dry Season (April to October), because in this season the mountains will be clearer and you can see the Vinicunca Mountain in its maximum splendor.

Another suggestion is to visit when the famous frosts (water freezing) are NOT falling, although you will not be able to see the mountains at 100%, I have seen that many travelers have visited Vinicunca at that time of the year and their pictures and videos are still as great, although with snow, so it is a matter of perspective.
