City Tour BY YOURSELF: Coricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenco, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay

The Archaeological Centers of Coricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenco, Puka Pukara and Tombomachay are the most known and representative of the Inca Culture . Through these precincts you will be able to appreciate and learn more about this culture that impresses millions of people. Before starting the archaeological route I suggest you purchase your TOURIST TICKET.

In this archaeological route you will learn and observe a little about how the Incas lived, their customs, their constructions, beliefs and much more. Without further ado, in this article I will give you information on how to get to these centers on your own from the city of Cusco, I will also leave you some suggestions, a map and tips before embarking on this route. Here we go!

Index

1.- First stop: Sacsayhuaman

There are two ways to get to Sacsayhuaman: one is on foot and the other is by public transportation. You can also take a cab, go by car or rent one, everything is valid!

Sacsayhuaman on foot: go to the Calle Resbalosa (5 minutes from the Plaza de Armas of Cusco), this street has a staircase and going up it you will get to Sacsayhuaman in 30 or 40 minutes, the time depends on your physical condition. This road is uphill. If you are still acclimatizing to Cusco I do not recommend this route because you run the risk of suffering from “altitude sickness”, also if you have small children and elderly people can also be a bit tedious and difficult for them, but it all depends on the physical condition of travelers.

Sacsayhuaman by public transport: for this we have two routes:

The first option is to go to Puente Belen (located 3 blocks from San Pedro Market) from there you can take a bus from the transport company “Cristo Blanco“, this bus will take you for S/. 1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars) and in 25 minutes to the Sacsayhuaman bus stop, from there you have to walk about 5 minutes to the entrance of the archaeological center of Sacsayhuaman.

The second option is to go to the Garcilaso bus stop, which is located on Avenida La Cultura (5 blocks from the Plaza de Armas of Cusco) and from there you must take a bus “El Huerto” that will take you also for S./1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars) and in 25 minutes to the entrance of Sacsayhuaman. You can choose the route that suits you best or the one that is closer to your lodging.

The tour in Sacsayhuaman will take you approximately 1 hour. At the entrance gate of Sacsayhuaman you can hire tour guides to learn a little more about the archaeological center, usually for a group of 5 people they charge between S/. 20 to 30 soles (USD 6 to 8 dollars) and for one person S/. 20 soles (USD 6 dollars).

Already down to the exit of Sacsayhuaman you will have a breathtaking view of the city of Cusco, take a picture and enjoy. You will also see 2 roads, I suggest you take the road that is not paved, as it will take you directly to the monument Cristo Blanco, there you will also have a spectacular view of the city of Cusco and you can take a picture with the monument of more than 8 meters high. Note. Some tours do not allow you to go to the White Christ, because they have already marked their own route, this is an advantage of going on your own.

2.- Second stop: Tambomachay

About 2 minutes from the Cristo Blanco (following the path of the vehicles) you will reach a road, from there you go to the bus stop (a few steps away) to take the bus of the transport company “Cristo Blanco” towards Tambomachay, the cost of the ticket is S/. 1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars) per person and you will arrive between 10 or 15 minutes to the Tambomachay bus stop. Touring Tambomachay is quite fast, it will take you between 20 to 25 minutes. At the entrance of Tambomachay you will find a mini market of handicrafts and alpaca and wool clothing, the prices are affordable, the cost of a poncho is around S/. 60 soles (USD 17 dollars).

3.- Third stop: Puka Pukará

Leaving Tambomachay, walking about 10 minutes, you arrive at Puka Pukará. You do not need to take any bus since Puka Pukará is very close to Tambomachay. Touring Puka Pukará will take you between 20 to 25 minutes and going up to the highest hill to see the whole valley will take you an additional 10 to 15 minutes.

4.- Fourth stop: Qenco

Leaving Puka Pukara you will have to walk back to the road and take the bus “Cristo Blanco” that for S/. 1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars) and in10 or 15 minutes you will be at the bus stop of the archaeological center of Qenco, from there you will have to walk less than 5 minutes to get to the door of the archaeological center. It will take you approximately 20 minutes to walk around Qenco. At the entrance of Qenco you can find some tour guides that for S/. 10 soles (USD 3 dollars) per person or S/. 30 soles ( USD 8 dollars) for a group of 5 people will give you a tour of the archaeological center.

5.- Fifth stop: Eucalyptus Forest (optional)

The Eucalyptus Forest is not an archaeological center, but since it is very close to Qenco I highly recommend it. It will only take you 5 minutes from the entrance of Qenco to get to the beautiful eucalyptus forest, which is great to rest and enjoy nature and take some good pictures and videos, and then continue with the route.

6.- Sixth stop: Coricancha

Leaving the eucalyptus forest you head towards the road to take the bus “Cristo Blanco” that for S/. 1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars) and in 15 minutes will leave you one block from the entrance of the Archaeological Center of Coricancha.

Important: the TOURIST TICKET does not include the entrance to the Coricancha Archaeological Center, so to enter the Coricancha you must buy the ticket separately, the amount of the ticket is S/. 15 soles (USD 4 dollars) per person (national or foreigner).

Duration of the tour Archaeological Route ON YOUR OWN

Between 7 to 8 hours approximately.

How to prepare for the Archaeological Route ON YOUR OWN?

If you decide to do the tour of the archaeological sites on your own, I suggest that you do it very early in the morning, so you take advantage of your time and have the afternoon free, remember that the archaeological sites open from 7: 00 am and public transport in Cusco begins its journey from 6:00 am.

Always carry coins of S / 1 sol (USD 0.20 dollars), since the buses usually do not have change for large bills.

Before getting on the bus check if it goes to the desired stop. Do not assume the route if you do not know the route perfectly. Also use Google maps to know for sure if you are going in the right direction.

You can hire the services of a tour guide at the entrances of the archaeological centers, the cost is approximately S/. 10 soles (USD 3.5 dollars) per person and S/. 30 soles (USD 8 dollars) for a group of 4 or 5 people.

Take snacks and a bottle of water with you. You can buy groceries at the entrance of the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Center, there you will find many food stalls.

Bring a camera or cell phone, I suggest you also bring a portable charger and an extra memory in case you fill the film of your camera.

Take a small backpack in case you decide to buy handicrafts along the way, they usually have a better price than in the Historic Center of Cusco or in Aguas Calientes.

Depending on what season you are traveling in Cusco, take a raincoat and a coat.

Find out about the archaeological sites you will be visiting. This in case you do NOT want to do the archaeological route with a tour company or do not want to hire the services of a tour guide at the entrances of the archaeological centers.

Finally, DO NOT FORGET TO BUY YOUR TOURIST TICKET.

More privacy with your family and friends.

You have more time to take pictures, record videos for your travel blog or fly your drone.

DON’T FORGET TO BUY YOUR TOURIST TICKET.

  • Thedisadvantages of going on your own to see the archaeological sites are the following:

You don’t have a tour guide.

To visit all the archaeological sites by public transportation will take you approximately 7 to 8 hours, but if you go with a tour agency you will only spend 4 hours of your time.

The journey is a bit tiring, especially for the elderly and small children, since it is longer and you will make more physical effort.
