About the Pampa de la Quinua

A few hours from the city of Ayacucho is the Historical Sanctuary of the Pampa de Ayacucho or Pampa de la Quinua, this place is located in the town of Quinua and is recognized for being a Natural and Historical Heritage of the scene of the Battle of Ayacucho, which took place on December 9, 1824, the day that sealed the independence of South America from the Spanish Empire. In the sanctuary you will find a monument that was erected in memory of the fallen heroes of the aforementioned battle, the monument is an obelisk that is over 44 meters high and was erected in 1968.

Apart from its importance in the history of Peru, this place has a privileged geographical location, so it is also known as a natural viewpoint from where you have the pleasure of viewing beautiful landscapes of the Ayacucho countryside; you can also appreciate the fauna and flora of the area.

What is the best season to visit the Pampa de la Quinua, Ayacucho?

The best season to visit Ayacucho is the Dry Season, which starts in April and ends in September, since it does not rain too much and the days are clear and hot. On the other hand, other very fun seasons with many travelers are the Holy Week season, which is usually celebrated the first weeks of April and the Ayacucho Carnival season, which is celebrated in the month of February.

How to get to Pampa de la Quinua?

  • By car

Traveling by car is the most convenient option if you want to have privacy and travel alone with your family, in case you do not have a car a good option is to rent one and get to Pampa de la Quinua without problems, you can also reach several of the tourist destinations in Ayacucho by road, so you would save on tourist service.

From the Plaza de Armas of Ayacucho you must travel 36.8 Km and you arrive at Pampa de la Quinua in approximately 1 hour.

Note: the road is completely paved and is easily accessible, at the entrance you will find free parking (public road).

  • By cab

A cab from the Plaza de Armas of Ayacucho to the Pampa de la Quinua costs s/. 40 soles (USD 11 dollars) approximately, per way.

  • By public transportation

To get to the Pampa de la Quinua by public transportation, you must take a bus from a parking lot located on Jiron Manuel Pozo Cuadra 13 (about 5 minutes by car from the Plaza de Armas of Ayacucho). In the parking lot you will find 2 ways to get to the Pampa de la Quinua, one of them is by bus, the cost of the ticket is S/. 5 soles (USD 1.20 dollars) per person; and the second way, by means of a collective car, the price of the ticket is S/. 10 soles (USD 2.20 dollars) per person. You will arrive at the Quinua Town bus stop in a little more than 1 hour.

From the bus stop of the town of Quinua (last stop), this stop is located very close to the small bullring of Quinua, you have 2 options to get to the entrance of Pampa de la Quinua, the first is walking and it will take you more than 20 minutes to reach the entrance of Pampa de la Quinua (everything depends on your physical condition); the second is to take a motorcycle cab (3-wheeled motorcycle) to the entrance of Pampa de la Quinua, the cost of this ticket is between S/. 5 to 8 soles (USD 1 to 3 dollars) each way. This last option is the one I always choose because it is the fastest and in only 5 minutes you are at the entrance of the Pampa de la Quinua.

  • By tourist agency

You can hire a full day tour to the Pampas de la Quinua and the Wari Archaeological Museum, among other places near the above mentioned destinations.

How much does the full day tour to the Pampas de la Quinua, Ayacucho cost?

The cost of the tour ranges from S/. 30 to 50 soles ( USD 8 to 11 dollars) per person. This tour normally includes: the Pampas de la Quinua and the Wari Archaeological Museum, among other places close to the mentioned destinations.

How long is the full day tour to the Pampas de la Quinua, Ayacucho?

The 1 day (full day) tour to the Pampa de la Quinua lasts between 5 to 6 hours, since you will also visit other places such as the Wari Archaeological Museum and the small town square of Quinua, as well as stop for lunch and taste some traditional sweets in some stores in the surrounding area.

What to expect and how to prepare for the Pampa de la Quinua, Ayacucho?

Bring a hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses.

Cash, preferably coins (nuevos soles), being a place a little far from the city of Ayacucho, you may find some stores or food stalls that only take cash.

A bottle of water is important, although you might find one or two vendors at the bottom of the dunes of the Pampa de la Quinua.

The climb to reach the Pampa de la Quinua is a bit difficult and exhausting.

At the entrance to the Pampa de la Quinua they offer you some horses to ride and thus climb with little effort to the top, the cost of renting the horses is S/. 10 soles (USD 3 dollars) per way and at all times you will have the help of the owner of the horses.

Pampa de la Quinua is suitable for children, the last time I visited this place I did it with my 5 year old nephew and he had a great time.

Where to eat in Quinua, Ayacucho?

In the town of Quinua you can find many places where you can have breakfast or lunch. Here I leave you our suggestions:

Centro Gastronómico de Quinua, this place is excellent for travelers who have a low budget or those who want to eat like a local of Quinua, this center is located right in front of the Quinua Town bus stop or in front of the Plaza de Toros de Quinua.

In this center they sell typical Ayacucho and Peruvian dishes, as well as natural beverages. The last time I went there, I ordered a rice with chicken and muña soda. You can find menus from S/. 8 soles (USD 2 dollars).

Restobar Límacos, this restobar has a great atmosphere and theme, you will feel as if you were in the middle of a forest in contact with nature. The restobar offers dishes from S/. 20 soles (USD 5 dollars) and has a great variety of Ayacucho and Peruvian dishes, as well as original signature drinks and a gallery of Ayacucho art and handicrafts. This place is ideal for photos and videos and romantic dinners.

Mamachina Restobar Hospedaje, the place has a very original Ayacuchan theme and has a terrace with natural elements. They offer very good typical Ayacuchan and Peruvian dishes, they also have drinks and offer lodging to travelers. All in one. The cost of their dishes starts at S/. 25 soles (USD 7 dollars). I found this restobar very cozy and excellent for families with children.

Domelisco ecoglamp, this natural space with a very good vision of a glamorous camping in the middle of the Peruvian highlands. This lodging is very well located, with good views of the Ayacucho landscape and the Obelisk of Pampa de la Quinua. Very good option to enjoy a picnic and campfire in Ayacucho.
