What is the best season to visit Ayacucho?
The best season to visit Ayacucho is the Dry Season, which starts in April and ends in September, since it does not rain much and the days are clear and hot. On the other hand, other very fun seasons with many travelers are the Holy Week season, which is usually celebrated the first weeks of April, and the Ayacucho Carnivals, which are celebrated in February.
How to get to Ayacucho?
By car
I think traveling by car is the most convenient option if you want to have privacy and travel alone with your family, in case you do not have a car a good option is to rent one and get to Ayacucho quietly, you can also reach several of the tourist destinations in Ayacucho by road, so you would save on tourist service.
From Lima to Ayacucho by private road you will travel 560 Km and you will arrive to Ayacucho in approximately 8 hours.
Besides, you can travel to Ayacucho from Ica, Puno, Cusco and Arequipa, in a car you can make a route all over the South of Peru.
By bus
You will find many transportation agencies that go daily to the City of Ayacucho from Lima, some of them are: Cruz del Sur, Movil tours, Oltursa, Flores, Palomino, among others. Prices vary according to the agencies and the amenities they offer, but the average price ranges from S/. 50 to 80 soles ( USD 22 to 14 dollars) per person per way. If you buy the tickets 1 or 2 months in advance you will find prices from S/. 35 soles (USD 10 dollars). I suggest that you make the trip at night so you can rest on the bus and take advantage to start the day in Ayacucho.
The cab fare from the bus terminal in Ayacucho (Terrapuerto Municipal Libertadores de America to the Plaza de Armas of Ayacucho) is approximately between S/. 10 to 15 soles (USD 3 to 5 dollars), even less, the price is not very high since cabs are relatively cheaper than in Lima.
The distance from Lima to Ayacucho by bus is 580 km. and you will arrive in Ayacucho in 11 hours (without stops).
In addition, you can travel to Ayacucho from Ica, Puno, Cusco and Arequipa through the interprovincial transport companies that I mentioned in the previous paragraph since being adjacent places the transfer times are much shorter, from 5 or 6 hours approximately.
By plane
Going by plane from Lima to the city of Ayacucho is a highly recommended option if you have little time for this tourist destination or simply do not feel comfortable traveling by bus for many hours.
The airlines that go from Lima to the city of Ayacucho today are: Sky airlines and Latam. You can find air tickets from S/. 130 soles (USD 35 dollars) per person one way, but everything will depend on the season in which you buy your tickets and the time in advance with which you do it.
You will arrive in 45 minutes at the airport of Ayacucho (Colonel FAP Alfredo Mendívil Duarte Airport).
Where to stay in Ayacucho?
In Ayacucho, being a very large region, there are many lodging options. In the city of Ayacucho, where there are a lot of hotels, hostels, Airbnb’s, among others, you will find banks, pharmacies, stores and tourist agencies, this is the most central area but also the most populous.

Where to eat in the city of Ayacucho?
Here I leave you the details of the restaurants or food stalls that we recommend and that you can find in the city of Ayacucho:
IñakyPizzas & Pastas, this small restaurant seemed very cozy and the pizzas fresh and with touches of Andean spices, made in a wood oven, which gives them a more intense flavor; also an important fact is that being the small local you can see very closely the preparation of the food, which always generates confidence, they also offer wines and drinks. The price of personal pizzas ranges from S/. 15 to 25 soles ( USD 5 to 7 dollars).
Chapla Pizza, this restaurant offers chapla pizzas and the dough with which they prepare the pizzas is the same with which the well-known and typical chapla bread of Ayacucho is prepared. The prices of the family pizzas range from S/. 25 to 40 soles ( USD 7 to 11 dollars).
Don Bigote, this food stall in the Central Market F. Vivanco, offers a great variety of Ayacucho and Peruvian dishes from very early in the mornings, they also offer coffee, emollient and infusions. Both in the morning and in the afternoon this stall is full of diners, you may have to wait a few minutes to have a space, but it is really worth it. The owners are very nice and the food is excellent. The price of the dishes start at S/. 10 soles (USD 2.50) and the portions are generous.
Puestos de Mayuchi, on weekends or during the festivities of Easter or the Ayacucho Carnival I suggest you try the handmade Ayacucho ice creams from the Mayuchi stalls. These stalls are usually located around the main square of Ayacucho and the ladies who sell it are dressed in typical Ayacuchan clothing, also in several markets in Ayacucho you can find mayuchi stalls. This typical Ayacucho dessert is made of milk, coconut, sesame, cinnamon, cloves and vanilla essence. The price of a small glass is S/. 3 soles (USD 0.80 dollars) and a large glass is S/. 4 soles (USD 1 dollar). It is really good!
